Diversity counts! Why is biodiversity so important? And what are the effects of the decline in biodiversity? Biodiversity is one of the essential foundations of life on earth. Using the example of fish, the WasserWelten show the diversity of animal species and the genetic diversity within a species. The diversity of habitats and their complex ecological relationships are illustrated using the example of recent and fossil habitats.
In order to deepen the topic, the following workshop, which is thematically appropriate to the tour, can be booked:
What is currently happening in our seas? The urgent, major environmental problems do not stop at our oceans: growing marine pollution, global overfishing and climate change, which is warming the seas and causing them to become increasingly acidic. Healthy oceans are extremely important for the diversity of life on our planet and for the global climate. The themed tour introduces marine ecosystems - the North Sea, coral reef and deep sea - and uses these examples to highlight current environmental and climate problems.
A journey through the history of the earth makes it clear that the emergence of species and extinctions - including mass extinctions - are natural evolutionary processes. In comparison, selected examples in the natural history exhibition show that the extinction and extinction of animal species in recent centuries are “man-made”. The thematic tour shows the complex ecological connections.

On a journey through 7 million years of human history, we meet the most famous prehistoric and early humans. Their partially life-sized full body, skull and facial reconstructions as well as 3D life pictures convey a lively and impressive picture of our ancestors. Fossil evidence of Ardi, Homo habilis or Lucy as well as the first stone tools and much more offer exciting incentives to explore the decisive development steps that took place in human development - most importantly the development of upright walking, the production of tools and the spread of humans across the entire planet.
Fossils, the petrified remains of extinct animals, are known to be the key witnesses to the history of the earth. They give us exciting insights into times long past. The themed tour uses the example of dinosaurs and other exciting prehistoric animals to illustrate how research reconstructs their appearance, lifestyle and habitat.

The offer offers an insight into the exciting animal world of the Ice Age and conveys it using a funny children's book that takes the little listeners into the Stone Age to hunt a wild mammoth. What challenges and surprises await the brave little hunters?
In order to deepen the topic, a Stone Age arm guard is then made from leather.
The excavation with a variety of tools, weapons and prey from Stone Age hunters has been completed. Now it is important to understand the work of the archaeologists - beyond Indian-Jones romanticism - and to process the recovered material. The historical context, the hunting culture of the Neanderthals and modern humans are reconstructed.
After the excavation, the archaeologists' work begins. The pots, drums and tools must be recorded and processed. The manufacturing technique and the function of the tools reveal a lot about the daily life of the early farmers in Lower Saxony. The first design of a cultural landscape becomes clear.
The aim is to decipher Roman coins (originals) from the imperial period with a magnifying glass, to determine the ruler and his official career and to interpret the “propaganda” on the reverse of the coin. This introduction to the work of a numismatist also provides the first contact with Latin texts that have been handed down on coins, tombstones and consecration altars. Part of Roman history comes to life again by dealing with the individual rulers.
Finds from Hedemünden - so far the only large Roman camp in Lower Saxony - show the beginning of contact between the Romans and Germanic peoples in what is now Lower Saxony. Roman soldiers and traders established contact with the Germanic peoples living here in the first four centuries. Through this contact, society in the so-called “Free Germania” changed; Germans served as soldiers in the Roman army and the better-off Germans supplied themselves with Roman imports.

Colonialism and imperialism have many facets and forms. They not only existed as formal foreign rule, but also have an impact in our contemporary societies, for example in the form of neo-colonial economic conditions or Eurocentric worldviews. The ethnological collection shows at various points what can be part of colonial contexts. The perspective is shifted towards the agency of indigenous actors and the knowledge base of other societies.
The change between warm and ice ages shaped the early history of people in Lower Saxony. Neanderthal hunting stories can be told based on the first campsites. Modern man leaves behind traces of tents, differentiated tool inventories and art objects made of amber. This hunter's life comes back to life with the help of tools, hunting remains and campsites.
In order to deepen the topic, one of the following workshops, thematically appropriate to the tour, can be booked:
We find the oldest traces of farming settlements on the fertile loess soils of southern Lower Saxony. Large houses with deeply buried posts, large earthworks near the settlements, remains of domestic animals and storage pits with crops illustrate the life of the early farmers in Lower Saxony. Community achievements such as the megalithic tombs that still exist in the landscape make organization and religious ideas clear.
In order to deepen the topic, one of the following workshops, thematically appropriate to the tour, can be booked:
With the invention of bronze, people began to live in a differentiated society. The traders and craftsmen have a special position in society, centers of power and very richly furnished graves make the upper class of this time clear. The typical ornamentation makes the special religious status of the sun clear, hoards and sacrificial finds are common, rock carvings depict the first personified gods, and the burial customs allow conclusions to be drawn about established rites. Knowledge of geometry and astronomy is available.

Artfully crafted jewelry, mythological creatures on ceramics, magnificent grave furnishings: this tour offers an overview of the everyday life of the Etruscans. What did they believe in? How did they bury their dead? What role did beauty and aesthetics play? And how did people live in the region of what is now Lower Saxony at the same time? In addition to looking beyond Etruria, the emergence of modern archeology as a science since the 19th century is also discussed. What is the difference between archaeological research then and now?
In order to deepen the topic, one of the following workshops, thematically appropriate to the tour, can be booked:
The ancient world was connected! The tour provides an overview of the special exhibition “Founders of Rome” and focuses on the diverse relationships between ancient cultures. There is plenty of evidence of cross-regional exchange of goods, migration of skilled workers and the inclusion of other cultural elements for the Etruscans. Greek influences can be found in various areas of everyday life such as religion and ceramic design. The Etruscans even left their mark in ancient Rome: the first kings of Rome were Etruscans and overlaps can also be seen in the world of the gods. The charisma of the Mediterranean region even reached north of the Alps and can partly be traced back to Nordic design.
From what sources does research draw its knowledge about the Iron Age and what statements can be derived from grave finds? How does archeology work today compared to the 19th century? And how does our idea of the past actually arise? In addition to an insight into the lives of people in ancient Etruria and the scientific history of archeology, the instrumentalization of history is also the topic of this tour. Using the examples of Italy and Germany, the development of national movements in the 19th century is examined with regard to the reference to the Etruscans, Romans and Germanic peoples.
Not all gods are kind to Heracles... Accompany the hero in 12 difficult tasks and find out what ancient ceramics tell us about the world of the gods. Afterwards, your own hero figure is modeled. The workshop also includes a thematically appropriate tour of the exhibition. Please bring a shoebox to transport the figures!
After the excavation, the work in archeology is far from over. Together we will look at what happens next with a find, explore some of the pieces and learn more about the lives of people in ancient Etruria and the Iron Age in Lower Saxony.
